2014 Gardening Season Adventures

Strawberries and Tulips.

Day 4 of working on our gardening projects today.

Did not get as much as done as I had hoped but we did manage to get a load to Cinnamon ridge, I weeded and cleared the tulip beds and cole raked the front yard . We took away the bags of leaves from the fall too.

On the way home from all our running around today, I just had to stop in at Art Knapps. I ended up leaving with 5 strawberry plants, a new hanging planter and some organic fertilizer. Last year I did not use fertilizer at all and was very iffy about what to use and how much. This year I have decided to give it a go only with organic of course. So I repoted my strawberries and misted them as well as my seedlings. I have the covers off so they can dry up a bit and dont get to damp or mildew.

It is a beautiful day. plus 18 the last time I checked. I have the music on the doors and windows open and now after re potting the strawberries I am working away in the kitchen as we are having our first BBQ of the year. I am of course making lots of low protein options and will share photos and recipes in my next post!

Happy reading :) 2014-04-13 12.23.19 2014-04-13 12.23.21 2014-04-13 12.23.24 2014-04-13 15.37.32 2014-04-13 15.37.34 2014-04-13 15.37.39

Weight loss

Kamloops Biggest Loser.

My 12 week program Kamloops Biggest Loser has ended.

Though due to health issues I was not able to go as much as I like , or work out as hard. I still did get results. Though I have not met my personal goals I am surprised with my over all loss.

I have officially only lost 4.4 lbs but I have lost 14 inches!! The inches was the biggest surprise. I found during the program I was so dishearten with my progress and my ability to loose weight quickly like the others.  I was so focused on the scale and the numbers that I did not follow my inches. I had set a goal of a total annual loss of 50 lbs. I knew that I would not make that goal in 12 weeks but I was hoping for around at least 15 lbs.

I am very happy with the inches that I have lost and I feel that it has given me the tools I need to now continue on my own. I learnt alot about my body and the best ways to be healthy. I am learning to focus on how I feel rather than the numbers on the scale and have been able to get rid of my scale at home.

I enjoy how refreshed and invigorated i feel after a really great work out.  I enjoy the cardio but I also enjoy the pain of a great muscle building work out too and seeing my reps and strength increase. I learnt about a well rounded routine and way to work out. Before I only did cardio thinking it was the best way to loose weight. But you will not loose weight if you dont build muscle. I had no muscle. I have lowered my body fat percentage by building muscle and that will help me burn more calories.

I look forward to continuing on my own and taking what I learnt. I still have a long way to go but I am feeling positive.

My activities not include hiking, swimming and yoga. I am not in the gym as much but I am trying to be more active out  doors and making it more fun than feeling like a work out. I aim to go to the gym for an hour 2 or 3 times a week. As well as swimming, aqua fit , long endurance walks, small incline hikes and yoga.  I am reshaping my body and making a lifestyle change to be healthier , more fit and more active and that is what I enjoy!

So I just wanted to share my news with you and let you know how it all ended up going!

After taking the week off due to a bad cold and flu I am anxious to get started again this week and cant wait to get back in the pool! with the nicer weather its great for walking and being out doors now too!

Thank you everyone for the support!

Low pro food / cooking, Managing the diet

Cambrooke Restore.

I have been drinking the formula Bettermilk for over a year now and it has done wonders for my body and my nutrition. I am a huge fan of the GMP whey protein in the new cambrooke formula’s and a big supporter of Cambrooke therapeutics. I have never enjoyed a formula so much.  I dont even mind that it is a powder. I don’t mind having to bring a sports bottle and water with me when I am on the go. Its really easy to mix I just have to shake it up really well.

Over the past few weeks I have been struggling with my health and its been harder to eat well , eat alot or eat regularly and I have had a lot of nausea from stress. My friend Katie decide to bring me some of her tangerine restore. I had tried it when it first came out but realized quickly that it was not sutiable to drink alone as my number one formula and had not wanted to be needing to drink more than one formula. I did not want to complicate my routine.

Since katie brought me a case of her restore, I have found it to be very enjoyable and not had to incorpirate it . Since I double up my bettermilk and have 2 in the morning, and 2 at night but nothing at lunch , the restore fits perfectly. As I had been wanting to increase my bettermilk and have some at lunch but then would be getting to much protein.

The restore works well at lunch because its light, it is more hydrating then it is filling. I find its great to carry in my purse and its really great after my work outs or a swim. So I take it with me in my gym bag. It has also helped get me through the stomach issues, cold and flu I have had lately.

At the BC PKU day event I tired the lemon lime and really enjoyed that one too. They are very refreshing. Though the past few days I am finding my mouth feels dry after and I need to continue to drink just as much water.

I just switched my prescription with my clinic to be my 2 (15g) bettermilk in the morning with breakfast ( with whatever flavour MIO I pick) , 1 restore (10g) either tangerine or lemon lime at lunch and another 2 (15g) bettermilk ( and MIO)  with dinner. So even though I am getting 10 grams more then what was recommended I feel much better through out the day.

I am almost finished the box Katie gave me and have ordered mine to come in soon! I could not pick between the 2 so I got both and that also gives me more variety too.

I was not a fan of the cambrooke complete bars but I look forward to see what is on the horizon for more GMP formula and look forward to being able to sample them all!

Well yesterday was a perfect day for yard work. We got tons done. Cole got out his chain saw and trimmed all our trees back, as well as taking out all the Chinese Elm trees that where growing along the back of our house. Which are more of a obnoxious tree/ plant. They take seed very easy and grow like weeds. Cole also pruned the peach tree way back and some of the branches on the pear tree that was growing straight up.

I had some chores to do inside then I joined him outside to prune the 3 rose bushes in the front yard and dig away the debris and rotton wood. We also took down the old rotten fence between our house and the neighbors. We took a few loads to Cinnamon ridge. Which is a free location for yard clippings, trees, bushes, grass, weeds, and gardening clippings.

Today is free landfill day as well as Cinnamon ridge is open longer. Our plan today is for Cole to re rack the front yard and side yard from tree and pruning debris that was left behind to small to go in the truck. I am going to clean out the floor beds in the front and side yard and pull away debris from where the tulips , lilly and daffodils are starting to grow.

If we have enough time today, after working in the front yard,  I also hope to start in the back yard.  The front yard is more landscaping and flowers. The back yard is all the hard work. The fruit ( strawberries, blueberries, grapes) peach tree and vegetable garden.

I may also make a trip to home hard where again for one more seed starter kit. I realized yesterday I would like to start some strawberries and blueberries . My raspberry canes do not look like they are going to come back this year. I would like to be able to make my own jam and jelly this year. I also love to bake with strawberries and add them to my low protein waffles , and smoothies!

It is also the day to water the seed kits inside as well as the lemon and lime tree. we are misting them every other day so as not to over water them.

Will of course report back later what we have actually accomplished today.

2014 Gardening Season Adventures

Day 2 of Gardening.

Well I went to walmart this morning before heading to the gym and I ended up buying more seeds and another kit. I told myself I was only going in for body wash and face cleanser but of course I had to check out the garden centre!

So I came home today with the second kit, cherry tomatoe seeds, beef tomatoe seeds, habanaro peppers, chilli peppers and asparagus.

I spent the morning learnt how to work with the peet holders, by applying warm water and letting them expand and grow then breaking them up to plant the seeds. Covering them over, misting down the seeds and applying the dome.

Than Cole and I decided the seed trays where to low on the mantel so we got my plastic table from my office and put them in front of our living room window. Figaro was not impressed to have his cat condo moved down from the centre of the window but hey! its only temporary until it is warm enough to put them in the sun room then outside.

According to the instructions once they begin to sprout I can put them out in the sun room for a few hours a day. When the seedlings get strong enough I break out the weaker stems and keep the strongest. I can then begin taking them outside for a few hours in the day starting in the shade and working to direct sunlight. So they should harden in time to go in the ground after may long weekend!

So now in all I have seed trays with tomatoes, peppers, beets, onions and asparagus.  So for the garden I am going to still do cucumber, lettuce, beans and peas. I have not decided if I will do potatoes this year because Tracy (cole’s mom) will.

It is suppose to rain today but if it does not I might start digging out my old flower beds from last year , pulling weeds and turning the soil. I need to get rid of the debris around the tulips, lilly’s and daffodils that are coming up so the weeds don’t strangle them out. Also I will prune the rose bushes. Cole can do the fruit trees with his ladder :)

My plan is to work a little bit each day starting in one area and working completely around the yard in a clock wise section. I think that will be easier than doing a little bit with everything every day. Not as over whelming.

Well that is all for now. I should make some lunch . Take care all! 2014-04-11 11.00.12 2014-04-11 11.24.26 2014-04-11 11.28.26

2014 Gardening Season Adventures

Spring Gardening has begun.

Today marks day one in to our gardening projects and adventures for this year. I am excited , nervous and overwhelmed. For not knowing what I was doing at all last year we had a pretty good harvest and I learnt a lot I am hoping to apply to our 2014 season. I really enjoy gardening, either flowers, plants or vegetables. I find it fascinating to grow something from a seed, watch it take form and develop, to grow into food , or flowers. Over the years I have been focusing more on nutrition, health and organic and have been adding to my list of foods to try and grow on my own.  Since moving to kamloops my gardening skills have been ever evolving and I am enjoying my new hobby. I thoroughly enjoy growing our own food that we actually eat. There is something to be said about being able to go outside to our yard and pick the food we want to eat that day. I feel so much better knowing where it comes from, how it was grown, what the process was and I am comforted to know that I have not used chemicals and have grown my own food organically. Which is becoming more and more important to myself and my family each day . Specially in today’s world of GMO’s, and chemicals. As an adult with PKU , my body is already pumped daily with chemicals from the low protein food that I consume , as well as my daily medications. So if I can do this one thing to cut back , and to give back to my body and invest in my health than I want to do that. I am becoming more interested each month into healthy nutrition, holistic nutrition and treatment with natural remedies. I am learning about herbs, spices, remedies, and organic growing.

I am actually interested in taking Natural nutrition courses and maybe one day working as a n holistic and natural nutritionist. I think I could really incorporate it into PKU diet management for others and myself too. I am interested in treating diseases and other aliments naturally, as well as making my own natural products, including spices, herbs and nutrition treatments. It is something that has always been hanging around in the side lines but has become more than an interest in the last year watching my sister in law, learning form her, as well as with my own garden , my mother in laws garden and our families strong ties to organic growing, and healthy eating. It is a new found passion that I am exploring. It is also a new adventure I will be documenting in my PKU blog for you all , step by step as I grow and learn through out this years gardening season. I will be taking photos and blogging hear under a new category dedicated to my garden.

I started today slowly and small , as it is only April. Today I got my first seed starter kit. Last year I did not start any of my seeds indoors and waited till late May to plant my garden outside. There where a few vegtables that I wanted to grow last year that I did not , as I waited to long.

So this year I started already in doors. I started today with Tomatoes, Onions and beets. I may get another tray started in the next couple days for more tomatoes, and peppers.  I have placed my tray on our fire place so it can get some light and I bought a water mister to gently water the plants while they are under the dome. I am excited to watch them progress and grow.

For my garden this year , I have decided to take more advantage of my space and to focus solely on vegetables and fruit. Last year I attempted to have a flower garden and a vegetable garden. Not to mention the established herbal garden from the previous home owners.

My plan this year is to plant, Lettuce , carrots, beets, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, peppers, and radishes and cucumber as well as  potatoes.

I will not be doing kohlrabi, artichokes or squash this year. My mother in law has half an acre garden and she plants the really big stuff! Including all sorts of squash, Swiss chard, lettuce, corn, and everything you can think of . My garden is more for daily use.

Than we have our plants that where established by the previous home owner. Our Rhubarb, and grapes. As well as 2 incredible fruit trees that produce in abundance. The pear tree and the peach tree. Both will need pruning soon.

Inside we have a lemon and a lime tree that lost all there leaves over the summer, but has just recently started to sprout new ones.

One day I hope to get an apple tree too!

So it is clear to see I am excited to get started. Though admittedly I am apprehensive for the task before hand. Our yard needs a lot of work from over the winter it took a beating.  As the weather gets nicer you will find me out there slowly working my way along the yard, pulling weeds, turning the soil, pruning bushes, clearing winter debris and getting ready to plant. I hope you will enjoy following my progress! I look forward to sharing it with you!

This past weekend was BC PKU day 2014, on April 5th. At BC Children’s Hospital, in the Chan Auditorium. This was our 4th Annual BC PKU day hosted by Canadian PKU and Allied Disorders INC. Though it was one our smallest in attendance it was one of my favourites.

We left Kamloops at 430 am in the morning and drove down to pick up Katie at the hotel and head to the event. We got there just in time for the 9 am start. I set up a booth for CanPKU merchandise that included the BC Campagin t-shirts, CanPKU awareness Bracelets, the “PKU and the Brain” book published by CanPKU, as well as stickers and magnets.  I assisted briefly with registration table and of course took photos at the event.

This year though I had the pleasure of enjoying more of the event as a guest and I leant a lot! We had some fabulous speakers this year and I feel that the day flowed really well. Each speaker was perfectly placed that they flowed from topic to topic, breaks where scheduled well and the food was the best ever!

I was also one of 5 of the Adults who attended. That was great to see that the numbers of adults in attendance is slowly increasing! Including myself Ian ( Male PKU Adult, originally from Ontario. Now living in Vancouver ) Katie ( Female PKU adult from Kamloops and my good friend ) Kim ( Female PKU Adult from Pentiction,  my friend and fellow nurse) and Tamara ( Female PKU Adut from Surrey BC ) all attended the event. I always enjoy socializing at the these events and answering questions for the other families so having other adults there and hearing about there difference experience is always exciting.

Our first speaker was Chad, We met a few years ago when he first attended one our events with his husband after adopting a baby with MSUD also known as maple syrup urine disease, another rare metabloic disease similar to PKU. Their son follows a low protein diet and drinks a special formula and does blood dots too. However it is 6 times more rare than PKU, and it is also deadly! There is NO coming off diet, instead of having high PHE levels, their son cannot break down the amino acid leucine. Instead of causing the same side effects of PKU, with in 4 days it causes brain swelling, coma and death!!  Chad joined our team of advocates and helped us lobby for coverage of the low protein foods and thus attended the event this year to talk about his advocacy and awareness journey. Chad and his family have accomplished so much and have raised so much awareness for MSUD but also funds for BC Children’s Hospital. Chad is a a wonderful speaker and his talk was very captivating and educational. His talk gave the day a strong start that was carried on forward by the remaining speakers.

Following Chad was Dr. Jerry Vockley. MD and PhD. ( read his profile at : http://www.chp.edu/CHP/Vockley,+Gerard,+MD,+PhD)

Dr. Vockley spoke to our group about Latest PKU research , Current Trials , Peg Pal and the new PKU Guidelines that where just published not to long ago. Dr. Vockely worked on the new guidelines and is also working on Peg-Pal. Of course just a few of many of his projects. I learnt alot about Peg Pal at this years event and am hopeful with the information we received that this really may change the face of PKU. Though it has not been approved for trails in Canada and is only being studied in America. They are having promising results. Unlike Kuvan, Peg Pal is a daily injection similar to insulin to diabetics. Peg Pal works by breaking down the PHE in your body and making it non toxic. It is not based on weight such as KUVAN. Peg Pal comes in amounts such as 10/20/40 mg injections and the doses are regulated by the medical staff.  Peg Pal is suppose to work with ALL forms of PKU and for ALL PKU patients. Not just non – classical.  They have seen results from Adults who have had levels around 20-30 mg/ dl go on PEG Pal and with PEG PAL, and a low protein diet the levels where brought down to around 3 to 4 mg/ dl and lower. So I will be closely following the progress and hope to learn much more about it.

As well as Peg Pal , Dr. Vockley talked to us about possible future treatments for PKU including stem cell transplants and liver transplants. Things you think of as “futuristic” and to “sci-fy” but are actually a real possibility. This does create excitement for myself and many adults. Currently these therapies and PegPal are not being tested in paediatrics. When Peg Pal switched to Paediatrics it will be dosed accordingly to weight.

I have had the pleasure of being apart of 2 talks by Dr.Vockley now, once in 2010 and our BC PKU Day and of course now. The man never ceases to amaze and awe me. An incredible PKU hero in my mind! I am looking forward to see what he does next!

After Dr. Vockleys speach, local Dr. Sylvia Stockler from BC Children’s Hospital spoke briefly about KUVAN and how to become part of trails and their current research project. They have some coming up that they need volunteers for. Unfortunately nothing for adults. I really wish our clinic for the adults where partaking in studies and research development specially for treatments. I find it so frustrating that they do not. Dr. Stockler had a guest speaker with her as well .

Than it was time for our annual group photo! Even with such a small turn out we still manages to get one this year. Cole was feeling sick and tired this point and had not eaten so he was to shaky to be our photographer for the group photo this year. Kim’s mom Bev, volunteered to take our group photo. Here is the one from my cell phone edited with instagram:

10155091_242073422583180_4440466513671738455_n

We had 40 registered guests this year and 10 sponsors, speakers and vendors.

After our group photo was the lunch and social time. The morning had been pretty long with no break so we where all pretty hungry and egar to eat! Poor Katie had got food poisoning from the hotel restaurant and was unable to eat any of the delicious low protein food options.

I made myself a low protein sandwhich , grabbed some cookies and fruit, but then I was grabbed by Jen and told about the low protein tortillas that one of the vendors was making fresh on the scene! to my delight , It was Malathy Ramanujam from Taste Connections! She was making low protein vegetable meat balls, and fresh tortillas. WOW! They where amazing! I ended up eating 3 tortillas, with 3 “meat balls” in each one! I was so stuffed!! The “meatballs” where made with grated vegetables like beets and carrots, with bbq sauce and a little flour to bind. This is so now my new favourite dish and I was ecstatic to learn that at the end of the day she would be hosting a cooking demo for us! Even all the non – PKU family and friends tried her dishes. Even Cole! and he loved them!

During the break I tried to float around and greet as many friends and families as I could and catch up. It was great to see everyone mingling and chatting. I had a great chat with our Cambrooke rep Eric Parker at his table about the formulas, new products and the future of Cambrooke therapeutics and our new BC food subsidy program. Needless to stay I will have some more news to announce at another time in my blog regarding our talks so please check back!

After the break we had 2 more speakers and the cooking demo.

Immediately following the break our next speaker was  Dr. Kendra Bjoraker , Neuroscientist . Who was speaking to us about PKU and the brain. Growing up and developing with PKU. Education and parenting of a PKU child, and an insight into the workings of a PKU patients brain. Our weakness, how we learn , how we grow and develop and many other interesting aspects. I found her speech particularly engaging. Partly because she use to be a special education instructor and had different techniques during her talk, diagrams, and props. Dr. Bjoraker spoke to us about how the PKU brain works, about working memory, processing speed, social, emotional and psychological aspects and side effects. I found I related to much of what she had to say and wondered to myself if doctors and my family had of know much of this information when I was younger if my childhood and education would have been different and how it would have benefited from this knowledge. I do not consider my learning difficulties as a disability or that I have disadvantages , but a lot of what she said struck deeply with me as well as a few other adults. I have hard to learn along the way what they now know to be for PKU brains and development and I found myself nodding and agreeing about statements that where made. Examples of how I learn best, where my weakness lie, how I process information, make decisions, and how my high levels effect me. I found myself saying a lot ” yes that’s me! ” I had to laugh when she talked about attention span and how we tend to drift or do a few things at once, because I was sitting there very visibly in the back row on my cell phone. Though I was live tweeting the event!

Our last speaker was  Denise M. Ney, PhD, RD. Who spoke to us about GMP and Whey Protein in the new formulas such as Cambrooke Restore, Bettermilk, and others. I found this speech particularly informative as I drink bettermilk. We learnt about the benefits if GMP. As well as the harvesting process, how the formula is made and why . Denise conduct research in mainly 2 areas, gastrointestinal physiology, and the nutritional management of PKU. Which lead to the development of our GMP formulas. That is actually natural  protein found during the process of making cheese. After hearing her talk, It is a wonder the hole group of participants with PKU would not all want to  switch to a GMP formula immediately. I know it has done wonders for me. I have benefited from it greatly.

After Denise’s talk we had a short break that I spent talking to Eric from Cambrooke foods about some of the information I learnt from Denise.

Following the break was our cooking demo with Mal from taste connections. It was also probably my most favourite part of the day. Not just because of the great tasty food, but also because Mal was a great speaker, very engaging. Also because I have a special interest in low protein food, new recipes, products and am always looking for new ideas to make. I was particularly delighted to learn about how nutritious the taste connections products are. Not are they simple to make, convenient and do not require the addition of more ingredients but also they include ingredients I am familiar with, can pronounce and are developed my Mal! Mal had everyone try her recipes. Not just our PKU attendees. We where all speechless! Not ever have I seen such flexible doughs, easy to use products and textures so very evenly matched to regular food! I fell in love with the fresh English muffins as well as of course the tortillas. I am so impressed! In the hour that Mal spoke with us she demonstrated many different recipes. She made the meat balls, the tortillas, chocolate cake pops, English muffins and more. It was so simple, mostly add water. And it was all cooked quickly enough that we got to eat all! ( what was left over I got to take home too!! ) I cannot wait to ask SPDC to bring in these baking mixes so I can give it a try. She made it look way to easy! But wow the textures of the food, specially the muffins where moist soft and delectable! I am now a new fan of taste connections and really cant wait to get our BC Subsidy on board with covering this product.

So as you can see, yet again BC PKU day 2014 was a true hit and in the end I am so happy we where able to attend. Recent events in our personal lives almost prevented us from attending this year, but as always it was so well worth it and I would have been devastated to miss out. A huge shout out and thank you’s to CanPKU for hosting this annual event, and to all our terrific speakers!

I cannot wait to see what BC PKU day 2015 has in store for us! Not sure how they will top this one!

For those of you who did not make it, I hope to see you there next year!

Low pro food / cooking

Maddy’s low protein sugar cookies.

2014-03-21 19.53.02 2014-03-21 19.53.18

I love cookies! its one of my go to snacks. I am a bit of a cookie monster. Its one of my faults. Its hard to make my own cookies though. They never cook right. Either they are to sugary and burn or carmalize and stick to the cookie sheet. I have made my own butterscotch cookies before with disasterious results. Now i tend to buy cookies. I love the baby arrowroot cookies, and oreos! as well as short bread cookies , sugar cookies, and some wafers. For low protein cookies I usually get the panriso ( formally know as canbrans) cinamon, orange, and coconut cookies. they are shaped sort of like flowers. I can eat a hole box in one go!

Its dangerous!

Then I found maddy’s low protein sugar cookies and they are so simple to make! All you do is use the can of baking mix, add 8 tbsp of margarine, 1.4 of water and mix together. Form the cookies and drop them out onto a cookie sheet. Bake for 15 mins at 375.

I have just finished baking mine, waiting for them to cool and harderd. I was hoping to taste test them tonight but now im heading off to bed. So I may sneak one little one even though they are still warm!

Tomorrow will be the true test! I will be sure to let you know what I think :)
