Composting

Is it totally weird how excited I am that today I got a composter! I spent the day today shopping for tomatoe cages, garden supplies, and than cole and i went with the truck to get a composter at home depo. It was 62 dollars before taxes and I am so happy to finally have one.

The idea has been there for a while , but it was not until my walk with Rae-Anne the other night when I finally decided. I want to be able to make my own fertilizer for our soil , flowers, fruit and veggies. I did some research and learnt about how it works and what you need to do.

We just got it home an hour ago and I have already started using it!  I read the booklet that came with it , on the way home in the truck. We already have a huge pile of dry lawn and garden trimmings in the back yard so that we can use as a our “brown” material. I placed the new composter beside it and lined the bottom with twigs and sticks like the book says. I brought a pale inside to put by our garbage and recycling in the kitchen. Since I made cole a salad for dinner tonight it already has scrapes in it!

It shall be an interesting process. You have to layer the composter with green material ( organic) like kitchen and produce scraps. With Brown material. Such as lawn and garden stuff.  Then you stir it or rotate it every 3 days or so. The composter is black and attracts, adsorbs and keeps very warm. Done right it should not smell or attract rodents which is what I was most worried about. I am just learning about the chemical reactions that take place, and what is produced. I am happy we have finally taken this step , to not only cut back on waste, but for our gardens.

Now I have to organize the kitchen to make it easier to sort through recycling, compost and garbage.

Let’s see what else did I do today? It was 30 degrees today and gorgeous out so I started my day off with a walk with a new friend. Then I ran to walmart and picked up 10 tomatoe cages. As my tomatoes sprouts are getting to big for the kits. I will have to pull off the weaker sprouts this weekend and thin out the ones I am keeping. I am not to sure when I will be able to transplant them outside though.

I also picked up 4 cages from a lady online and then cole found even more old ones at home.

After I got home from that I started digging out flower beds in the front yard in front of the house. I have decided that I don’t want to miss out on flowers this year but I do not want them in the back yard. So I am going to make some raised garden beds, and plant my sun flowers there. Last year they grew to be about 9 ft tall and reached our bathroom windows and kitchen.  The bed that I have begun digging is approx 16 feet long and I am going to dig it 3 ft out and line it with rocks. So I started that but had to stop when cole got home to get the composter. Now it smells and looks like rain is on the way.

Tomorrow Rae-Anne and I are going to go pick popular tree buds, then go to the garden swap and shop . Followed by the farmers market! So of course another very busy day and I feel very happy with the progress.

I really truly am enjoying myself and the work on the garden!

Here are some photo of my first tulips that bloomed today to end us off! Enjoy!

I had been holding off for over a week , debating what I was going to write for my 200th blog post. I wanted it to be something significant to mark the occasion and special for this milestone. Yet hear I am sitting here beginning to write yet another post regarding my garden!

I woke up this morning, with a plan in my mind on just what I was going to do today. This was the top of my list. I knew I had all these pots and containers in the back yard that last year did not do so well. I needed to get them new soil, clean them out and give them new life.

So off I went to Art Kapps. Planning only to get soil, but then the out door garden centre was open and who could resist? certainly not I ! I browsed for a while, initially looking for colour to add to my vegetables , thinking that I was going to use the garden beds this year souly for fruit and veggies , my plan was to use my pots and containers for flowers.

Then I walked past the herbs and my plan drifted away! Now I do have an established herb garden beside the vegetable garden , however I have yet to identify what each of them are. They are quit grown over. I have identified the sage. The others are questionable. They smell like licorice. In the year and the half that we have lived here, we have not used them and have been buying the herbs we do use.

I have never really used many fresh herbs until last fall when I started making my own soups, and then this year when I joined epicure. Now I see how truly essential they are!

So of course I had to grab a few. I walked away with many. I first picked up a curry plant, followed by :

Oregano, Thyme, Rosemary, basil, and mint! I could have kept going but was trying to be responsible with my funds.

I did however manage to grab a few seed packs of flowers, after realizing since buying the herbs , it was probably best not to by to many more plants on my budget.

So I checked out with my herbs, seeds and 4 40 lb bags of Art Knapps container soil.

When I arrived home I gathered up all my pots and containers, dumped out the old soil, hooked up the hose and washed them all thoroughly and spaced them out to to dry on the front lawn.

Kicked off my shoes, sat myself down on the lawn and cranked up my music and went to soiling, fertilizing and planning what would go where!

I ended up planting my flower seeds. I settled on the St. Johns fire, some morning glory, pansies, and 2 others that names escape me. I planted my herbs, and then I grabbed my strawberry plants from inside, separated them and re potted them in the hanging baskets with new fresh soil and fertilizer. So hopefully they will start to come back. When all was said and done, I had one lonely pot left. So I grabbed a tulip bulb from the garden, re potted it and am going to sit it inside on the dining room table to add some colour!

I still have so much to do and so many big plans but am learning to divide my time, task manage and spread out the work.  I have had to leave it for now. The pots are not to heavy for myself to bring in to the sun room, so they are set outside waiting for cole to come home .

I am making a low protein pasta salad, getting cleaned up and off to run some errands for the PKU event in June.  When I get home I have 3 more pots to do, make dinner and off to our next ball game tonight!

Busy busy! Hope everyone is doing well. Glad its finally warm outside. Its been over cast for a few weeks , even rained in one our games at the ice breaker tournament we had this weekend. Today is suppose to reach 23 degrees! I shall not waste it !

Onions, beets, Peppers and Tomatoes

2014-04-29 17.14.19 2014-04-29 17.14.22 2014-04-29 17.14.26 2014-04-29 17.14.30 2014-04-29 17.14.33 2014-04-29 17.14.38 2014-04-29 17.14.44 2014-04-29 17.14.57

Apperntly watering with the mister was not good enough for the onions and beets in the one seedling starter kit. So this week I have been watering each section with the lid off the mister getting it good and wet and with in 2 days the onions and beets are spouting through the soil.

on our second kit, the tomatoes are 3 to 4 inches tall now, the peppers are about 1 inch tall and this morning more are breaking through including the asparagus and remaining peppers. Very exciting indeed!

The one strawberry is taking off quit nicely to. However the other pot is not doing so well. I think that it is because it is only soil from last year. I went to Art Knapps today and got new soil so am re potting the reaming strawberries and a hole new inventory I picked up this morning.

so more to come later!!

Social Media

National PKU News.

All my life I have had what I call “PKU heros” People who have influenced the evolution of PKU. Who work to improve lives of people like me. Who have impacted treatments, research, and made a difference to daily life for us.

One of my long time hero’s or I guess the proper term is Heroines, is the influential and incredible Mrs. Virginia Schuett. Founder of the national PKU news , newsletter and website.

For as long as I can remember PKU news has been a fixture of comfort and my first source of knowledge,  my first sense of community, and my first connection to the PKU world.

My mom subscribed to it when I was younger, and later she gave me the newsletters. I always looked forward to receiving  mine. Before internet and before facebook it was my only way to feel connected to other with PKU. Like I have said before, I never met anyone else with PKU until I was 13. I looked forward to the stories of inspirational PKU kids who had won the Robert Guthrie scholarship. The pen pals and the recipes. I didn’t really care for the news section when I was younger but now I love it.

I have spoken to Virginia before and I have worked with her on articles before. She has also donated to a few of my events. Each time I have the thrill like im talking to a celebrity or a person of power. unlike with an authority figure where you are nervous and anxious. When I email back and forth with Virginia I am thrilled that she has taken the time out of her life to reach out into mine. I appreciate all that she does and really look up to her. Specially with her work on the PKU food list. That I call my PKU bible. Her hard work and dedication to the community is admirable.

I would really love to meet her one day.

Even in the day and age of social media, internet , emails , websites and blogs. There is nothing like the novelty of receiving a newsletter in the mail. Its always nice to get something other than a bill in the mail. I still look forward to my copy, and I still look forward to the scholarship stories, the recipes , pen pals but now I also like to know about community events, research, news and Virginia’s opinions on PKU topics.

I feel like the PKU newsletter connects us all. No matter where we are , PKU news reaches us all , in each country, there is something relevant to each of us and its a good way to keep up with current events in other countries , to prehaps use in your own campaigns for awareness, research and the progress of PKU!

Though it is with sadness that today I learnt that PKU news is celebrating its 25 years this year but are struggling to keep it going.

Not many people are willing to pay for the newsletter any more with all the free information readily available. I try my best to continue my subscription when I can as the funds go to so much of PKU news projects. Like funding the Robert Guthrie-Richard Koch scholarship, as well as to funding the PKU food list, Recipes and cook books , and all the hard work Virginia does for our community.

PKU news is a non-profit organization that relays on donations and the sales of the newsletter.

Here is what Virgina has to say about PKU news:

“it is dedicated to providing up-to-date, accurate news and information to families and professionals dealing with phenylketonuria.

National PKU News now has over 2000 subscribers who receive the organization’s newsletter. Most subscribers are from the US, but an increasing number are from other countries including from Canada, Western and Eastern Europe, South America, East Asia, and the Middle East. . Subscribers include parents, young adults with PKU, professionals, grandparents, relatives, and anyone with a connection to PKU.

in addition to publishing the newsletter three times a year, I also produce and publish educational materials for PKU such as the Low Protein Food List and various cookbooks, including Low Protein Cookery for PKU and Apples to Zucchini: A Collection of Favorite Low Protein Recipes. I also respond to thousands of questions and requests from subscribers via telephone, letters and e-mail messages.

Contrary to what many people think, however, I have always been and am still the only employee of the organization. At one time, we had a grandparent volunteer who assisted me in the office, but not for several years. That means when you contact the organization, you should not be surprised when I answer your call or letter —- there is no one else here! I also hope that knowing I am the only one here will help you to be patient in getting a response. I have a lot to do to keep National PKU News going, and an ever-increasing amount of correspondence.

National PKU News rents a small office in a privately owned building in Seattle. It is not connected to any university, hospital, or PKU treatment program. Running National PKU News is my full-time job; I no longer am involved in clinical practice ”

After reading Virginia’s email to the listerve today I decided to write a post in her honour in hope of generating interest amongst my readers and perhaps persuade  you into the donating to PKU news or subscribing to the newsletter.

Here is the email that went out to the listserver today from Virginia

I am writing to let you know that the spring/summer newsletter is now at the printers and will be available for distribution soon. If you are a subscriber already and due to renew, please do it right away so that you are on the mailing list (which will be generated on April 27). If you are not a subscriber, I strongly urge you to consider starting a subscription. Please go to this link to renew or start a subscription online: http://www.pkunews.org/forms/PKUNewsLetter.htm

Of course you can also just send me a check, made out to National PKU News and send to the address below. The cost is still only $18 for US, $22 US for Canadians and $28 US for other foreign residents. This price has not changed for 15 years!

This issue of the newsletter is very special, as it marks the 25th anniversary of National PKU News!! I started the organization in March 1989 and have had the good fortune of being able to keep it going for all of these years. Unfortunately, the newsletter is struggling financially at this time for a variety of reasons, and so I want to urge everyone to help by renewing your subscription or starting a new one–and sending generous donations if you value the organization and what it has accomplished over these past decades.

The special anniversary issue is full of inspiring stories—from this year’s Guthrie-Koch Scholarship winners, all of whom are outstanding, and from 22  of the 300  subscribers who have been with me continuously for at least 20 years. Their children are all successful young adults now, and I think you will enjoy their stories. (I plan to feature more stories from long-time subscribers in other issues of the newsletter as there were too many for a single issue.) Of course, there is also much more in the issue—some great recipes, a fascinating research report giving guidelines for treatment for adults (for the first time based on concrete biochemical/physiological findings) and much more.

Best regards,

Virginia

So please I urge you all, to show your support for this wonderful PKU heroine and all that she does for our community. I can strongly say you will enjoy and look forward to recieveing your newsletter in the mail. And your kids will enjoy the pen pal section too!

I really hope we can keep this alive, and not let it fall into the past much like letter writing, paper mail, pen pals and even books. With today’s technology its getting harder and harder to keep things like this around and I would love to see PKU news grow with us into the future .

Thank you for your attention and consideration. I hope you consider what I have presented to you!

That's my PKU life, Weight loss

Sports and PKU

When I was a child in elementary school, my clinic and my mom pulled me from physical education class. I was told it was because I was breaking my muscles down to fast and that it was breaking down the PHE in my own bodies protein. I was also told that it could elevate my levels. ( later in life learning how false this is!!)

I never played any sports, I wasn’t on any teams. As I grew up and went through middle school and high school, I still did not do P.E. I never learnt to be apart of a team and the life skills that comes from playing sports. At the time I didnt care and I was thrilled to not have to do it.  I had such low self esteem , my confidence in myself was so low and I didnt want to be judge or watched.

I couldn’t see myself doing it right and being laughed at. I shined away from all the teams, sports, and was not in the least bit physically active or athletic. I have never been in good shape. I have been skinny, because I was sick. Not because I was physically fit. I didn’t go to gyms , I didn’t do anything recreationally. Expect for swimming. I just love to be in the water. I love how I feel in the water and I love the way it moves against my skin. I did give it up for many years though when I no longer felt comfortable in a bathing suit. Also when I was being bullied and peer pressure or beaten up , I did not want to go anywhere were I might run into someone from school. So I hide away.

But I did not think about it much. I was not jealous of my class mates who played soccer or volley ball or anything else. Before I was pulled out of PE I had tried out for teams, I tried volley ball and I tried High jump and short stop ball. I did a couple relays. However like I said I was in terrible shape and had trouble breathing and I didn’t make any teams. I was never good enough . So I gave up and moved on.

Now that I think back, I wish I was made to keep at it. Playing sports is good for PKU!! it helps regulate the body and some people can eat a bit more on the days they work out. Or they increase their formula. Katie my PKU friend here in kamloops grew up skiing, diving, riding, and all sorts of sports. She tells me she learnt alot from it. It gave her confidence and something to do. She made friends with her team mates and they bonded over their similarities.

I look back and think about people I knew who played on sports teams and how they worked together effectively they learnt to be a team member, to be responsible and accountable , to play their roll and help there team at the same time. All life skills that can continue on through out life, especially in the work force.

I also think about the people who travelled for games, and the excitement they must have felt. The pride after a win that you worked so hard for. Celebrating wins, mourning losses, trying , practising , learning and improving.

Growing up I thought it would be to hard to take my food and my formula with me , or to mange my pku while being on a team, travelling on buses to games, not coming home after school because of after school practices. I hid my PKU , didn’t follow my diet and didn’t eat at school so would have to wait hours to go home and have my formula.

I see PKU families not much like Katie’s, who have these ready made liquid formulas, ready to go pre made foods, or dishes that are easy to travel with. PKU life has become so much more convenient and a second thought for me. Its just my lifestyle now, apart of who I am. When I plan ahead, meal prep and portion out my baking it works really well for me. Now we have apps for on the go too!

I think If I had of grown up with PKU in today’s times, I may have been into sports.

After my surgeries as an adult, I tried to work out and loose weight , buy going to the gym and various exersize programs that I never could stick to or was never successful.

It was not until I moved to kamloops that I gave any thought towards sports. I joined yoga, aqua fit and badminton with my friend sherry. I learnt that I had way more fun and I could feel the blood pumping over my hole body. I felt invigorated. I felt I breathed deeper and inhaled fresh air , breathed out stale air. I cant describe how it made me feel. But I had fun!

While working nights I fell away from sports, gained weight, struggled with keeping consistent and looseing weight.

Since I have been off nights, I am back at the gym, I am swimming, going to yoga , walking and hiking and I have been enjoying it so much!

Than last week a new opportunity presented it self. I saw a post on fb for slo-pitch soft ball. When I moved to kamloops in the summer of 2012 my work was going to get  a team together and I had considered signing up for then and was disappointed when they could not get enough people. So after talking it over with Cole, and our friends we decided to give it a try!

We messaged the team last Tuesday, and we have a practice last Wednesday and our first game on Thursday. I happend to fast that it was hardly any time to really think about it!

It was so much fun!! I actually hit the ball once and got a run and I was so happy!! I swelled with pride and laughed that I actually hit the ball. It was a good feeling. I love the sound of the crack the bat makes when you hit the ball .

We signed up with our good friends Claudia and Casey so it is something we can all do together. It also gets cole and I out of the house and something we can do together.

Today Cole and I went shopping and bought our equipment. Cole bought us each new cleats, and gloves, he also got me a ligh bat. We went across to the school today by our house and practised for 30 mins. I am slowly learning and getting the “swing” of things. Cole has been teaching me and is very patient. I have been learning the rules , and fight the impulse to swing every time , or to duke from the ball.

It is a really great feeling. I am so proud to be able to say I am part of a team, I am glad its a fun league or as cole calls it the “beer league” and that its slower , also that all the members are patient and help me out by telling me what to do. So I hope i can continue to learn and improve. I am looking forward to our ice breaker tournament this weekend. It is going to have live music, BBQ and lots of fun!

Here are a few photos from our first game last week. ( oh and we won it too!!!) as well as a photo of my new equipment . I didn’t realize it all matched untill we got home!

Moral of the story. NEVER ever let PKU prevent you from doing something. From living your life and being apart of normal life experiences. PKU does not control who you are and what you can do. You can control it by managing it. As well as living your life to the fullest. Dont let it hold you back. If you do not hold you back, you will not grow to resent it, you will not fall of track as much, cheat or eat foods you shouldn’t. Learn that it is just another part of you that makes you special. Think of it as a lifestyle and mange it to fit your life, not fitting your life around it.

A lesson I should have learnt many years ago but now I am glad I have and I can pass it along to you.

2014 Gardening Season Adventures

Tomatoes – The vegetable that wishes it was a fruit.

My little tomatoe sprouts have broken ground this morning. Very exciting!

Last year I didn’t grow any tomatoes and this year I am trying a few different types. I don’t eat a lot of raw tomatoes since Cole is not a tomatoe lover , but I do love to snack on cherry tomatoes, and I use them in some cooking, as well as my low protein pizza.

This year I am looking forward to canning my own tomato sauces, pizza sauce, spaghetti and  pasta sauces. There is just so much you can use tomatoes for. Even for soup bases and salad dressings and my low protein chilli recipe. So it just makes sense to grow my own this year.

I hope they succeed and do well. I am have so much I want to do with them!

did you know 1 cherry tomatoe has 4 mg of phe? and only 3 calories?

a raw hole medium  tomatoe such as Italian or beef, has 16 mg phe and 11 calories!

So I say the more tomatoes the better!

2014 Gardening Season Adventures

Beets!!

IMG_3369 IMG_3370 IMG_3373

My beets are already sprouting! I cant believe it. So awesome to see there progress. I didn’t expect to see anything for at least another week.

I never use to be such a fan of beets. But Cole’s mom grows them and many years ago when I had knee surgery Cole had received a few cans of his mom’s and he friends them up for dinner for me, He fried them in olive oil and garlic. I fell in love!

Last year Cole’s mom Tracy showed me how to boil them, skin them and preserve them. We just recently ate the last of our beets from summer 2013. I don’t cook them quiet as well as Cole but I still find them as a good vegetable to eat with my mashed potatoes. I really like the taste of them.

cooked or canned beets have 49 mg of phe for 1/2 cup and 20 calories.

Beets are also used shredded in salad or in Malathy’s recipe from taste connections for “vegetable meat balls” that I fell in love with a few weeks ago at BC PKU Day 2014!

Going to have to hurry up getting the vegetable garden outside set up!!

I haven’t done any work in the garden the past 2 days. While I was waiting for our friends and family to arrive for the BBQ on Sunday I did get the back yard rose bushes pruned. As well as the flower beds pulled, cleared and raked. I also pruned the raspberry canes. I didn’t think any where still alive. I thought I would be pulling them all out. However there are many that are still doing well and beginning to bloom.

It is raining tonight so when it clears up and is warm again I will get back at it.

So much fun to watch my seedlings grow and sprout knowing what they will grow into becoming!

Low pro food / cooking

First BBQ of the year

2014-04-13 19.58.36

Well yesterday ended up being a truly beautiful day and we got so much done. After working in the garden some more we decided to have a BBQ. By 4 pm it was 21 degrees blue skies and so sunny. It was great weather to fire up the BBQ.

Normally when we have BBQ I end up making myself vegetable kabobs, corn on the cob, and baked potatoe . Also I do a vegetable grill basket. Yesterday I decide to do something different.

So I got to work in the kitchen and I made some low protein wheatstarch buns from the recipe on-line with cambrooke foods.  For the buns I used the country sunrise mushroom burger mix. Tripled the recipe and formed them into 2 patties. We grilled it on the BBQ along with everyone else and I put Dayia Cheese on it to melt. I added miracle whip, purple onions, lettuce and tomatoes to my bun and had a burger with everyone else . I had everything done to early though and my burgers ended up sitting out for 2 hours before I got to eat them and they rose and became to hard and crumbly. If I had of put them on the grill right after I made them while they where still moist I think they would have tasted much better.

While I was preparing the buns I also made a low protein potatoe salad. I peeled and boiled russet potatoes ,drained and mashed. In a separate bowl, I finely grated, carrots, celery, pepper, onions . Then I added sweet relish, miracle whip, mustard, sugar, and fresh parsley. I mixed this together in a small bowl and added it to the potatoes. I chilled the salad for 2 hours.

I also made a regular garden salad, and fresh guacamole .

I think the BBQ was a lot of fun. We had great company and a few drinks. I was sipping a peach cider and enjoying the low protein meal I put together. I had not tried to BBQ this way before and I learnt a few things and know what I will change next time. I am happy because now I have more options too. Though I did miss having some good old corn on the cob!

I look forward to the next BBQ , and hopefully it will be a little earlier in the evening, warmer and have more fruit. Nothing tastes like grilled Pineapple on the BBQ. or even strawberries on the vegetable kabob’s. A few of my other favourites is grilled carrot sticks and asparagus sticks!

Before I used the country sunrise burger mix I would use a portabella mushroom as a burger pattie and I would season it with lemon juice and mashed up avacado. I think I will try one of each next time on my wheatstarch buns and let you know what one I like best :)

I just love summer and BBQ season! Dont let your PKU hold you back from enjoying summer get togethers and picnics! There are always options :)

Happy Grilling!

2.5 year old PKU Toddler Abe- looking for his family.

1362020146180-300x224 1362020155727-1-300x224

Abe is a 2 1/2 year old boy available for adoption from China.  “Abe” wasn’t diagnosed with PKU until around 10 months when the orphanage noticed his hair turning yellow. The orphanage immediately changed him over to a low protein diet. Although he wasn’t happy about it at first, he isn’t a picky eater now. “Abe” is an adorable little boy who would thrive given the chance to be part of a family and receive proper care for his PKU.

Feel free to share about him to anyone that might be interested.
